Animates in the media
October 2nd 2025
Our KQ Futures Programme has engaged with more than 500 children and young people in its first full year of activity

Part-funded by the LCR Life Sciences Innovation Zone, KQ Futures is inspiring the next generation of innovators by bringing together education and industry.
Almost 350 students from 31 secondary schools and colleges were welcomed in the last academic year via our Career Insights Day and Future Innovators Experience Days, while more than 150 primary school children enjoyed the Animates Roadshow, an interactive showcase of ‘The Animates: Learning in Liverpool’ illustrated story.
We also ran our first ever KQ Interns programme, as well as providing training for local teachers as part of their Continuing Professional Development.
Invention is for everyone
This book shows children that creativity belongs to us all. Why do people invent? What processes spark new ideas? Sometimes it’s about spotting gaps and making things better. Sometimes it’s about starting one idea and ending up with another. And sometimes the best inventions happen by accident!
This book, created with support from Connected Places Catapult, introduces children to the idea of inclusive innovation – that failure is part of learning, everyone can contribute, and together we can build a world for all to enjoy.
River of Life
Funded by a group of organisations across the Maritime industry to tell the story of innovation, decarbonisation and digitisation. These Partners included Bibby Marine, Cammell Laird, Connected Places Catapult, Liverpool City Region Careers Hub, Liverpool Cruise Terminal, Liverpool John Moores University, Maersk, Mersey Maritime, Peel Ports, Trinity Logistics Ltd.
They have funded the creation of a Digital Library of Assets housed on this website including the book, lesson plans and tutorials to download. Every Primary school will receive a copy of the book and lesson plans and a number of workshops with schools and teachers will be held. The Animates will attend many industry events too.

Learning in Liverpool

This book takes children on a tour of the city’s incredible life science industries – opening the doors of labs, centres, and businesses across the Knowledge Quarter for a fascinating peek inside. From cutting-edge processes to the latest innovations, the book shows that many of the things children see around them are created right here in Liverpool – with exciting jobs in amazing fields waiting on their very doorstep.
Funded by our partners Liverpool Knowledge Quarter and Connected Places Catapult, the story featured organisations across the Liverpool Knowledge Quarter and focused on Inclusive Innovation. Books and lesson plans were distributed to every primary school in Liverpool, supported by workshops across the region. Along the way, The Animates joined World Book Day celebrations, Innovation Investment Fortnight – and even met the Metro Mayor for the launch celebration!
